Director Search (June 2019)

Are you a choir director looking for a queer space? Interested in showcasing the queer music of the choir world? Quorum Boston is an LGBTQIA+ vocal ensemble in Boston, dedicated to performing music by queer composers. We’ve performed music by Hildegard von Bingen, George Frideric Handel, Benjamin Britten, John Cage, Samuel Barber, Francis Poulenc, Ned Rorem, Meredith Monk, inti figgis-vizueta, and various local living queer composers, including members from the group.

We are currently looking for a new music director to begin in the Fall 2019 season. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about our mission of bringing queer music to the world and providing a space for queer musicians.

The choir meets Monday nights 7:30-9:30pm and rehearses year-round. Board meetings happen on the second Monday of the month at 7pm before rehearsal. Our rehearsal and performance locations are always wheelchair accessible. We are committed to accessibility as an ensemble and will work with candidates to ensure disability-related needs are met.

Disabled people, nonbinary and transgender people, People of Color, undocumented people, formerly incarcerated and/or otherwise marginalized people are encouraged to apply. If you are excited about this role, but are unsure if you meet one or more of the requirements, we encourage you to inquire and/or apply.

  • Queer.

  • Respectful of all identities under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella, including the use of people's correct names and pronouns

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the voice and trans voices in particular (i.e. will help foster vocal growth and won’t harm voices or persons).

  • Has experience with varied types of choral singing (not just classical)

  • Passionate about choral music, queer justice, safe spaces, and promoting queer music.

  • This individual will be responsible for selecting and preparing our music in consultation with members of the group.

    • This entails requesting music from the Librarian, giving them time to order, copy and print the music.

  • This individual will facilitate and manage interactions with living and local composers, being sure to offer opportunities for composers within the choir.

  • This individual will schedule and lead rehearsals, concerts, and retreats. They will teach the music and offer opportunities for soloists and other directors within the choir.

  • This individual will work with the Social Media Coordinator to find new members, promote the group, and respond to our email.

  • This individual will work in tandem with the Director Selectors to find a replacement accompanist and/or director when needed.

  • Currently $40 per hour for rehearsals and $150 per concert. We’re hoping to later move to a seasonal payment which will compensate the director more.

To apply, fill out this Google form and we will be in touch. The deadline is June 30. We anticipate interviews and trial rehearsal to happen in July. If you have any questions, feel free to email them at
